NOT LONG BEFORE THE GOVERNMENT RAISE PROBATE FEES.
From May this year, probate fees are being raised dramatically. Currently probate fees are a flat rate of £155 (if a solicitor completes the application) or £215 (if you apply in person). Under the new regime, the fees will be banded with estates between £300,000 and £500,000 paying £1,000, and those with estates between £500,000 and £1m paying £4,000. For estates over £1m the probate fees will be between £8,000 and £20,000. Inheritance tax is payable in addition to these fees. With property prices in our area continuing to increase rapidly this could affect many people. These changes have been brought in quietly and have gone largely unnoticed despite overwhelming opposition across the legal sector during a government consultation last year. The government have justified these fee increases as necessary in order to continue funding the justice system as a whole.
